Making money without leaving Humboldt

Growing big, making money and remaining in Humboldt County -- that is the theme of the North Coast Prosperity Network's next Prosperity Business Leader Luncheon, the fifth in a series of semimonthly gatherings intended for local business leaders to share and discuss ideas about the future of Humboldt County industry.
This month's luncheon will feature the management team of Carlson Wireless, a growing local company in the field of wireless communication, which will give a presentation outlining how they plan to grow, increase revenue and remain local.
Dan Gunderson, vice president of sales and marketing for Carlson Wireless, said the presentation will focus on taking advantage of the innovative spirit of Humboldt County residents and reducing the importance of immediate delivery of product.
The last part is due to the inherent obstacles involved in doing business in a remote community.
Past presentation topics have covered marketing strategies, employee acquisition and retention, as well as how a business can learn from both success and failure.
Jacqueline Debets, Humboldt County Economic Development coordinator, said that these luncheons are unique in that they provide local business people with a rare opportunity to bounce ideas off one another.
She said that the first half of the gathering tends to be a time for folks to just eat and talk freely, with the second half devoted to a presentation on the designated topic, followed by a question-and-answer period.
”Being in business is inherently kind of isolating just because you're so focused on what you're doing,” Debets said. “This is an opportunity for local business people to get together, share ideas and learn from one another.”
One such case was Denie Schach, owner of Hairdini Inventive Products, and Sharon Taylor of Reflections Jewelry. The two met at a Prosperity Business Leader Luncheon and are now collaborating on the marketing, design and distribution of a new decorative hair accessory.
”You wouldn't think you could make these kind of connections in Humboldt County,” Schach said. “It's nice to see that the community is working together.”
Prosperity Business Leader Luncheons take place on the last Fridays of January, April, July and October. The cost of the luncheon is $40 and the deadline to R.S.V.P. is July 23. Sign up online at www.northcoastprosperity.com/luncheon or call Eric Verprauskus at 476-4812.
